Starring Gérard Depardieu and Yves Montand, this hugely successful French historical drama concerns a bizarre battle royale over a valuable natural spring in a remote French farming community.
The film is set shortly after the First World War. City dweller Jean Cadoret (Gérard Depardieu) assumes ownership of a valuable natural spring when the original owner is accidentally killed by covetous farmer César Soubeyran (Yves Montand). Cadoret hopes to move onto the land with his wife Aimée and young daughter Manon to fulfil his dreams of an idyllic country life. However, Soubeyran and his equally disreputable nephew Ugolin (Daniel Auteuil) pull every dirty trick in the book including blocking up the spring in order to bankrupt Cadoret and force him to sell. The novice farmer stands firm at first but can he succeed despite the lack of water and his health problems?
If tickets are purchased for both Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, the ticket price is £7.50 for both films.
Refreshments will be available before the performance and during the interval.
"Technically, the film couldn't be better.
Visually it is perfect (or if not, close to it). The cinematography
captures the beauty of the countryside and the difficulties encountered
by the inhabitants, while the score is orchestrated to enhance the
film's emotional impact."
