A new teacher at a harshly administered boys' boarding school works to improve the students' lives through music.

The widely successful orchestra conductor Pierre Morhange returns to France when his mother dies, and reminisces about his childhood inspirations through the pages of a diary kept by his old music teacher Clément Mathieu. In 1949, a young Pierre is the badly behaved son of single mother Violette. He attends a boarding institution, Fond de L'Etang ("Bottom of the Pond"), for "difficult" boys presided over by strict headmaster Mr Rachine. Mathieu arrives as a new teacher and undermines the brutal regime, brightening up the school by assembling a choir, leading to the discovery of Pierre's musical talents and a transformation in the children. This is a wonderful feel good factor film for all, but bring a handkerchief.(Subtitles)
