Oscar winning biographical-drama telling the story of French singer and Cabaret star the Little Sparrow, Édith Piaf (1915-1963).
Her mother is an alcoholic street singer, her father a circus performer, her paternal grandmother a madam. During childhood she lives with each of them. At 20, she is a street singer discovered by a club owner who is soon murdered. Coached by a musician who introduces her to concert halls, she quickly finds fame. Constant companions are alcohol and heartache. The tragedies of her love affair with Marcel Cerdan and the death of her only child, belie the words of one of her signature songs, "Non, je ne regrette rien." The clever back and forth nature of the editorial narrative suggests the patterns of memory and association.
"Somehow Olivier Dahan's impressionistic heartbreaker of a movie gets it all in. And Marion Cotillard, lip-syncing Piaf's songs and digging into her soul with gale-force urgency, gives a performance for the ages". Peter Travers, Rolling Stone Magazine 15.vi.07
Directed by Olivier Dahan. Winner of two 2007 Oscars. (Subtitles)
